Mr. Pecker Electronics

Company History

I started building my tuners in the mid 1980's for myself and a few friends at first. In the early years I etched and drilled all the circuit boards myself in my shop/Ham Shack.   After several years I decided it just wasn't worth all the time and mess involved to  continue etching my own boards, so I contracted K&F Electronics to make all my boards for me. (The best idea I ever had.)

I  (myself) hand construct, and test, each and every one of my tuners. So if you're expecting a factory perfect clone, you won't get it here. I do use only quality componets to insure the owner years of trouble free service in all my products.

I want my customers to be 100% satisfied with my product as well as my service.   I must be doing some thing right. Check my product reviews at eham.net/reviews/detail/5121. Our product sales now have customers now in over 15 countries.

Thanks to all of you who have purchased one of my 3898 Peckers. Even more so to those who are repeat customers.

Why is it called the 3898 Pecker?

Back in the "Cold War" years there use to be a signal on HF that HAM's would call a "Woodpecker" . It was believed to be some kind of jamming signal out of Eastern Europe. It was more likely a radar signal or some thing less sinister. The group I use to Rag Chew with was on every night on 75 meters at 3.898.00 MHZ. after midnight. Some of the HAM's from that era might recall the group by the name "The Weenie Net" After finding out about the circuit and building one for myself, others started asking me to build one for them as well. So For the lack of a name, those asking about the tuner would ask for a "woodpecker thing". After talking it over with the group we all decided to drop the wood and add 3898 to give it a name that would be easy to remember and possible help some to find where they could order one. So that's the story of the "3898 Pecker" name.

I would like to thank all of those who have supportd me with their help, as well as all of my great customers, (many who have become very good friends) here in the U.S. as well as in countries all over the world.

Amateur Radio's

SSB Mode Tube Amplifier Tuning Aid.

The Deluxe In-line Model 3898 Pecker.

Why Do You Need A 3898 Pecker?

The Pecker is used to tune your amplifier (or tube final transmitters) in the SSB Mode without a CW RF carrier. The Pecker is a single pulsed tone that works with a 70% off & 30% on duty cycle with your transmitter in the SSB Mode. This short duty cycle allows you to take your time on tune-ups (or testing of your amplifier, antenna, or other equipment), with very little chance of tube damage, power supply stress, and arc-over with your amplifier, or tube transmitter, like you have using a CW carrier. The Pecker allows you to tune your amplifier to full Peak Output Power quick and easy. You will never go back to the old "Peak & Dip" tune-ups with a CW carrier for drive once you have used a "3898 Pecker". Ask those who use a Pecker and they'll tell you that for speed and ease of tune-ups, you just can't beat the Pecker. HF Operators of all ages and in 23 different countries have bought the 3898 Pecker. Read some of the reviews they posted at http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/5121 .

I have made hundreds of these fantastic tuners over the years, and now here is your chance to get a 3898 Pecker, board, or a custom built "In-line Model" for your radio station. Don't be mislead by MFJ's "Amplifier Saver Tuning Pulser" (the MFJ-214). That device just plugs into the transmitters CW key jack and all it does is pulse your CW carrier while the transmitter is still in the CW mode. (You get the same results from a CW speed keyer.) The 3898 Pecker uses a single pulsed tone through the radio's SSB MIC audio circuit , thus tuning your amplifier in SSB MODE for SSB OPERATION. You must use a PEP meter when using the 3898 Pecker.

The 3898 Pecker can be used on any SSB transmitter that has a ALC control. I have built them for Kenwood, Icom, Yaesu, JST, Collins, Drake, Heath Kit,Ten Tec, Swan, Flex 5000. If you have some thing other then those listed, contact me before you order.
